The Taylor family
Due to the size and large families I will concentrate on my direct line -
1. Charles Henry Taylor (Great grandfather) -
He was born on the 27th August 1858 at old Town Bideford.
The birth certificate gives Charles parents as Samuel a farm labourer and Julia Taylor formerly Christmas.
Julia was illiterate as instead of signing she just left her mark.

Charles married Elizabeth Sluman when he was aged 22,
on the 4th September 1880 at the Bideford Parish Church.

The marriage certificate gives Charles father as Samuel taylor a labourer,
Elizabeth's father's name as James Sluman a labourer.
The wedding was witnessed by John Sluman, most likely Elizabeth's brother Oliver John Sluman
and Susan Taylor, Charles's younger sister.
Charles and Elizabeth first appear together in the 1881 census, living at 37 Geneva Place, bideford, Devon.
Charles's parents were living close by at number 40 Geneva Place.

Charles and Elizabeth had 11 children -
1. Rosa Taylor born 1881 (never married)
2. Charles Henry Taylor born 1883 (married Kate Essery)
3. John Earnest Taylor born 1885 (married Susannah Lee)
4.Samuel Richard Taylor born 1887 (married Elizabeth Gertrude Weeks)
5. Richard Taylor born 1889
6. Nellie Taylor born 1890 (died aged 17)
7. Gertrude taylor born 1893 (never married)
8. James Edward Taylor born 1895 (married Emily Lucy Bedler)
9. Walter Frederick Taylor born 1897 (married Marrion Bessie Copp)
10. Florence Maud Taylor born 1900 (married Harry Lee)
11. Ethel Elizabeth Taylor born 1907 (married Frederick Churchill)
In the 1891 census they were living at the same address with the first 5 children.
Charles's parents are now living next door at number 36.

In the 1901 census they had moved to 21 Geneva Place and they were living with ten of their children.

In the 1911 census they were living with six of their children
as by then four had married and sadly Nellie had died.

Charles Henry Taylor died on 11th November 1923 at his home, 21 Geneva Place, Bideford.

His death was caused by stomach cancer and witnessed by his brother Richard.
2. Samuel Taylor (2nd great grandfather) -
He was born on the 16th February 1822 at Bideford.
I've checked the 1841 census for Samuel and he's not with his mother or anywhere in Bideford?
He married on the 11th March 1848 at Bideford church to a Julia Christmas.
The marriage certificate gives Samuel's fathers name as Isaac taylor and
Julia's fathers name as Charles Christmas.
Julia was illiterate as she left her mark.
The marriage was witnessed by James Farley Broom
and
Jane Christmas, Julia's younger sister.
Samuel and Julia Taylor had 8 children -
1. John Taylor born 1850 (married Harriet Skinner)
2. William Taylor born 1853
3. Samuel Taylor born 1854
4. Charles Henry Taylor born 1858 (as above)
5. Isaac Taylor born 1861 (married Mary Jane Richards)
6. Susan Taylor born 1864 (married William Henry Folley)
7. Richard Taylor born 1868 (married Gertrude Phillips)
8. Thomas Taylor born 1873 (married Emma Hoyle)
Samuel and Julia first appear together in the 1851 census,
along with their first son John and Julia's younger sister Fanny.
In 1861 they are still at Old Town, along with their five sons and a lodger called James Broom.
2. Samuel Taylor (2nd great grandfather) -
He was born on the 16th February 1822 at Bideford.

Samuel died of old age and bedsores at 36 Geneva Place, Bideford aged 75 on the 24th february 1899.

His wife Julia died of Pleurisy after 3 days aged 78 on the 1st March 1906 at 17 Geneva Place, Bideford.
3. Isaac Taylor (3rd Great Grandfather)
He was christened on 23 November 1800 at Bideford.
Isaac married on the 25th October 1821 at Bideford to a Susannah Philliphant
Isaac signed and Susan left her mark
The marriage was witnessed by Harriet Griffey and Margaret Taylor (Isaac's younger sister)
They had two son's - who married two sisters
1. Samuel Taylor born 1822 (married Julia Christmas - as above)
2. John Taylor born 1834 (married Elizabeth Christmas)
They first appear in the 1841 census
In a telephone conversation with another researcher, I learnt he was in prison for larceny, which is theft.
In 1841 with Isaac in prison, Susan was own her own with her son John, who is aged 7.
In the 1851 census Isaac is out of prison and back with Susan living at Old Town, Bideford, with their son John aged 17, a cordwainer (shoe maker) and two visitors James Broom and Thomas Davies. His younger son Samuel is living next door.
The 1861 census has Isaac and Susan living together, with his son Samuel living next door.
Isaac died Apr qtr 1868 in Bideford district.
In the 1871 census in now on her own, listed as widow and a pauper.
Susan died on the 17th Jan 1886 at Bideford.
He was christened on 23 November 1800 at Bideford.
