The Chapple family

Chapple family tree.

My Chapple family research centers around three families:

1.George Chapple born abt 1855 at Buckland Brewer, he married on the 22nd May 1881 at Buckland Brewer to a Emily Braddon who was born on the 26th December 1862. Emily's mother was Harriet Braddon she was never married and spend a long period in Torrington union workhouse (1871 and 1881 census) Their time together is confusing and short, but I believe they had at least two daughters Elizabeth Braddon, born out of wedlock in 1880 at Bulkworthy and Bertha Ann Chapple born 4th December 1881 at Buckland Brewer. Sadly George died at the end of 1884 aged only 29. Emily went on to remarry a Richard Hill Cole from Tawstock in Jun qtr 1888, having another daughter Ellen, but sadly Emily died aged only 30 in 1893.

The above 1881 census shows the household of 3 Rickards, with the unmarried George and Emily living with George's parents.

2. Henry Chapple born about 1804 at Buckland Brewer, he married on 27 March 1834 at Buckland Brewer to a Rebecca Broom, who was born about 1812 at Woolfardisworthy. They stayed in Buckland Brewer all their lives and first appeared in the 1841 census. They had six children -

1.Elizabeth abt 1833 (married William Morrish)

2.Mary Ann abt 1836 (married Thomas Furseman)

3.Henry abt 1840

4.John abt 1842 (married Mary Richards)

5.Ann abt 1851

6.George abt 1855 (as above)

1851 census - Rickards, Buckland Brewer

Rebecca died Mar qtr 1858, Henry remarried a Ann Morrish on 22 April 1860. Henry worked as a agricultural labourer all his life and died Sep qtr 1888.


3.John chapple unknown birth date, he married abt 1803 at Parkham, to a Grace Broom, who was born abt 1781 at Parkham. They had five children -

1. Henry abt 1804 (as above)

2. Ann abt 1808 - married William Brend

3. John abt 1810 - married Margaret Ashton

4. Elizabeth abt 1824  {twin}

5. Grace abt 1824 {twin} - married Joseph Austin

Unfortunately John never  appears on any census records and Grace is given as widow when she is living with her son in the 1851 census. Grace died in Sep qtr 1882 aged 71.
