Dunn family - Branch via Samuel Churchill

The Dunn family

Grace Churchill (nee Dunn) parents were James Dunn and Sarah Hopper. James was born about 1803 at West Putford, he was christened on the 8th April 1810 at West Putford, the son of William and Jane Dunn. He married Sarah Hopper at Woolfardisworthy, Devon on the 9th April 1935. 

Together they had 11 children -

3. Thirza born 1840 - 1905 (married John Holman)
4. Richard born 1843 - 1910
5. Betsy born 1845 - 1860
6. Grace born 1848 - 1926 (married Samuel Churchill)
7. John born 1850 - 1852
8. Ann born 1854
9. Dorcas Ann born 1857 (married Samuel Jennings)
10. Norah Jane born 1859 - 1912 (married Samuel Hancock)
11. John born 1863 (married Elizabeth Ann Hocking)

Grace was born on the 10th May 1848 at Woolfardisworthy.

1841 census - James and Sarah Dunn 

James and Sarah are found at West Buck Cottage, Woolfardisworthy, North Devon in the 1841 census.

1851 census - James and Sarah Dunn

In 1851 they have moved to Ashmanworthy, with 5 of their children including Grace aged 2.

1861 census - James and Sarah Dunn

1871 census - James and Sarah Dunn

In 1871 James and Sarah have moved to Bradworthy, living at North Down,

 James is working as a farmer of 55 acres.

1881 census - James and Sarah Dunn

In the 1881 census James is aged 71, he is now retired and listed as blind.

Ann Churchill (1878 - 1951) Sister of James Churchill

My Great- Great Aunt Ann Churchill born on Wednesday the 8th May 1878 at Abbotsham. 

The younger sister of James.

 She married when she was aged 32, 

to a Alfred William Glover on the 15th June 1910 at Abbotsham.

1911 census - Alfred and Glover

The above census shows Alfred aged 30, working as a mason married for 9 months,

 living with Ann aged 32 and their first daughter Beatrice. 

Alfred and Ann had two daughters Beatrice Mary (1910) and Irene Glover (1920)

Alfred was a local builder.

Alfred died 6th July 1944 aged 63 and Annie died 31st March 1951 aged 72.

Branches off my Churchill family line

In my research I have looked into all the branches off my main Churchill line, working from the most recent these are -

Taylor - connected via my grandfather, Frederick Henry Churchill.

Several large families that have stayed in the town of Bideford.


Chapple - connected via my great grandfather, James Churchill.

Mainly from the village of Buckland Brewer.


Dunn - connected via my 2nd great grandfather Samuel Churchill.

From the villages of Woolfardisworthy and West Putford.


I will go through these lines in more detail before moving on to the Churchill family that where from Somerset.

Samuel Churchill (1854 - 1878) My 2nd Great Grandfather

Samuel Churchill was born on Sunday 9th April 1854, he was the one who brought the Churchill's to Devon.

1861 census 

He was the eldest child of Robert and Mary Ann Churchill (nee Hoare), born in Curland, Somerset.
 In the 1861 census he was aged 6 and living with his parents at a house called Britty.

1871 census

In 1871 he was aged 16, now working as a farm servant for Thomas Hart at New House Farm.

On Thursday 29th May 1975 at Bideford registry office, he married Grace Dunn. Samuel was 21 a farm labourer, Grace was 25 a domestic servant. Grace was illiterate as she left her mark, rather than sign. The wedding was witnessed by Mary Ann Hodge and Mary A. Crossman.

I don't know why Samuel left Somerset for North Devon?

Samuel and Grace had two Children James born in 1876 and Ann born in 1878.

Sadly Samuel died two days before Ann was born, he died on Monday 6th May 1878 of Typhoid fever.

 who died on the 5th November 1926.
